History of the Department of Technology and Society at SUNY Korea

The Department of Technology and Society at SUNY Korea is the oldest and largest of the departments initially introduced to SUNY Korea by Stony Brook University.  A brief timeline of events is provided below.

2009.05.12  SUNY Board of Trustees approves a resolution (download a PDF version of the resolution below) authorizing the development and implementation of overseas educational programs and related academic degree and research collaborations with partner universities and institutions located in the Incheon Free Economic Zone.

2012.03.02  1st Day of Class for the Charter Class in the graduate studies program (M.S. in Technological Systems Management)

2012.08.03  Operation of undergraduate program approved by MEST.

2013.03.04  1st Day of Class for the charter undergraduate class of the B.S. program in Technological Systems Management.  129 students applied for the program and 26 students from South Korea, the United States and Chile enrolled out of 30 who were offered admission.  

2013.06.29 1st graduation of students with M.S. degrees.

2016.03.01 Our department created a new undergraduate specialization in Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable Development (abbreviated, ICT4SD). Three new courses were added to the existing SBU curriculum to prepare our student for the growing importance of using 'big data,' managing network infrastructure, empowering new 'digital entrepreneurs', and analyzing mobile technologies. These new digital technologies revolutionize many facets of life worldwide such as politics, education, markets, e-medicine, and digital finance.

2017.13.01 Graduation of the first undergraduate class with a BS in Technological Systems Management. We were pleased to have President Stanley of Stony Brook University (In red gown without cap).

2018.01 New focus in Disaster Risk Reduction added to the M.S. in Technological Systems Management.

2019.08 Gerry Stokes becomes the Chair of DTS at SUNY Korea. 

2019.09 New ICT4D undergraduate specialization is implemented.
