Welcome to the Department of Technology and Society and to the challenge of understanding and enabling technology in and for society. Our mission is to help the planners and decision-makers of the future be prepared for that future.
Understanding technology and society in Korea and elsewhere is our research mission, but our Department’s most critical products are our students and their ability to apply what they learn here to some of the most challenging issues facing society, not only here in Korea, but around the world – not only now, but well into the future.
Every country has a different story they tell about technology and its role in both its development and in its current society. Korea has a wonderful story. Not many decades ago, Korea was a developing country and a recipient of foreign assistance – now, it is the 11 the largest economy in the world and its companies like Samsung, Hyundai, LG and others are highly regarded and successful global high-tech brands. Understanding how that happened and making sure that our students are prepared to be the leaders making sure that it continues to happen is very important. There are many lessons for both developing and the developed countries to be learned here. The choices that are made in the next decade are vitally important for the future of this country and our planet. We educate our students to learn to support and then become the decision-makers whose choices will shape our future.
